With the Kindergarten Application closing this month, please join one of the many information sessions being offered by our district as well as us! We are so proud of the kindergarten programs and experience at PS 88q, and we want to answer any questions you many have. Tonight, our District 24 team is hosting an information session. Thursday and Friday, we will be hosting two opportunities to learn more about us!

District 24 Session, tonight. The deadline to apply for Kindergarten is January 20th - 14 days away! Our goal is to have all our families register on time! Attached is the flyer previously sent to our amazing PCs. Tonight's workshop will be provided in English, Spanish, Bangla and Polish.

It was wonderful seeing everyone back in school! Remember, our school hours are 8:00am-2:20pm. Arrival is on 68th Road, with grade K-2 entering through the large school yard and grades 3-5 entering through the small school yard. Early arrival begins at 7:30am

Grades 4 and 5 Small School Yard

Grades 2 and 3 on Catalpa Avenue (front of the school)

Dear Parents/Guardians/Teachers:

The Society of Women Engineers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I.) invites parents/guardians and their children in grades 3 to 5 to attend Virtual Exploring Engineering Day (EED). EED is a FREE half-day program that introduces children to the field of engineering through fun hands-on activities led by college students studying engineering. Children who enjoy solving puzzles are sure to enjoy this program, as well as learn how engineers make our lives easier, safer, healthier, and fun!

Exploring Engineering Day will take place through an online platform called Gather.town, on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Be sure to click the “Submit” button once you’ve completed the registration form, otherwise, we won’t receive your responses!

If you have difficulty accessing the registration page or if you want to verify that your child is registered, please email ExploringEngineeringDay@gmail.com or call 603-856-4527.

Registration will remain open until January 20, 2022, but register early because the program fills quickly! An email will be sent out shortly after we receive your registration to confirm you are registered or if you are on a waiting list. More information about this is included on the registration form (URL provided above). Because program capacity is limited, we do not accept walk-ins.

The program is divided into two sessions, a morning session from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and an afternoon session from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Parents should complete registration forms for each of their own children. RPI will lead and engage the children in four 35-minute hands-on, interactive activities.

We encourage parents to accompany their children during the program and help with the technical aspect, yet we also understand that some parents work on weekends and may not be available to accompany their child/children.

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2021–2022 school year—our long-awaited homecoming!

I am beyond excited to begin our historic return to full-time, in-person instruction—after the most challenging 18

months of our lives. This year, the first day of school means everything to me. Not only because I’m your Schools

Chancellor, but because I’m also the mother of a New York City public high school student who is over the moon

to return to the classroom full time.

My daughter’s experience is a living, breathing testament to what I’ve learned in more than 20 years as an

educator: nothing replaces the experience between a child and a teacher in a classroom. That is why it feels like a dream come true to welcome all our children back to safe, supportive, rigorous school environments. The first

day of school is a true homecoming for our school communities.

I know that COVID-19 and the Delta variant are on all our minds, and I want to be clear that the health and safety

of our children, families, and school staff is our highest priority. For the last several months, we have worked

with school leaders, public health experts, and union partners to develop and health and safety approach that

provides multiple layers of scientifically proven prevention strategies.

We are meeting or exceeding Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for cleaning

and disinfecting surface areas in our schools, inspection and certification of ventilation in our buildings, and

regular random testing of staff and students for COVID-19. We know masks work to reduce the spread of disease, and we are requiring all students and staff to wear face coverings when riding on school buses and anywhere on school property, indoors and outdoors. This is regardless of vaccination status unless students have a medical exemption.

The most important step you can take to protect you and your family from COVID-19 is vaccination. All New

Yorkers ages 12 and older can receive a free COVID-19 vaccine. In partnership with the NYC Test & Trace

Corps and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, all school sites serving children 12 and over are

offering Pfizer-BioNTech vaccinations to eligible New Yorkers during the first week of school (with second doses

provided at the beginning of October). No appointment is needed, and you can learn more about site hours from

your school or by visiting schools.nyc.gov/covid19.

You can find the most up-to-date information on how we’re working to keep students and staff healthy and

safe on the DOE’s website for school year 2021–22 at schools.nyc.gov/homecoming.

I hope you are as thrilled as I am about the first day of school. You can be sure I’ll be out visiting classrooms

throughout the week, welcoming back our students, families, and educators—and celebrating all we have done to

get to this point.

What Class Will My Child Be In and Who Is Their Teacher?

In June, our teachers reorganized our students for their 2021-2022 class assignment. Teachers also received their grade placement for September. ALL OF THIS IS ALWAYS TENTATIVE, AS MANY THINGS CHANGE OVER THE SUMMER.

• All student classroom assignments will be mailed the week of September 1st.

You may wonder, what can change? As you hear on the news, we are still awaiting guidance from the Department of Education about September. Some of the factors that make this situation "tentative" are room capacity, social distancing requirements, etc. During the summer, no staff are working, with the exception of myself. All staff return on September 9th. We are working to ensure all safety protocols are in place, no room exceeds the capacity and that every student is in the appropriate setting. If you are currently enrolled in PS 88Q, but will not be returning, please email me and Pat Williams. Having accurate numbers of students makes all the difference in balancing class size.

As a reminder, all class and teacher placements are tentative, as factors beyond our control make it a fluid situation. As always, any questions, feel free to reach out to me.
